I caught the tail end of a squabble between Joel Watts – unsettledchristianity.com – and Jason at pastoralmusings.com. Normally, I would steer clear of disagreements between people who are as versed as they are at what it is they do. However, I noticed a trend in the way Jason approaches disagreements that cannot be slapped down by proof-texting.
In a post from today, Jason ended his argument with this paragraph:
So, Joel, continue on the path you take if you wish. I want no part of it. I have no respect for it. I pity you for your lack of faith as well as the lack of character that leads you to willfully show disrespect with no good cause. I shall continue to pray for you, but I have no more time for your foolish denial of the truth of Scripture.
While it is condescending, it is also indicative of a pattern that Jason displays – at least in his digital life. How did I know about this pattern? He did the same type of thing to me last month.
In the immediate aftermath of the massacre at the Sandy Hook Elementary School on December 14th, Jason engaged me on my comments that gun policy in this country needed to change. After a couple of back-and-forths on Twitter, I got this response:
It appears that when the going gets tough for Jason, he finds the most self-righteous way possible to back down. Sure, these seem like reasonable things to say when someone wishes to discontinue a conversation. However, when you use this tactic again and again, it begins to look like a cheap strategy.

Yeah, you pretty much nailed it. Jason just does not do disagreement well, or rationality for that matter. His post against me is one of the funniest I have ever read.
Jason is a smart cookie – no doubt, and good hearted, but he quickly mischaracterizes people and in the end, lies about them. As he had done with everyone he has had a severe disagreement with.

Notice the Frank Luntzian way Jason – and theologians of his ilk – use words and phrases to avoid saying the overtly combative adjectives they have in mind. What’s nice about that? It allows them to claim moral high-ground when attempting to exit a conversation. It’s cleaner, but not preferable.
You’ll notice a theme. Jason has the final word. Period.
