Seeing Grey In A World Of @ejoelwatts

I hate that it's shades of grey Joel and I keep butting up against each other on.

President Obama supported civil unions because the political danger for him supporting marriage was too grave. He has changed his tune.

The new Pope says this:

We are not searching to discriminate against same-sex unions. We don’t have a fanatic vision. What we are asking is that the laws are respected. We believe that we must propose more comprehensive civil union [rights] than currently exist, but not [gay] marriage

Pope Francis, if I'm reading his explanation right, is supporting civil unions so marriage rights are put to the side. His belief is that civil unions aren't marriage. The gays get something and God's plan is saved.

Still, there's been nothing on clarification of his remarks about gay adoption.

The new Holy Father won't ever – it appears safe to say – find himself in a situation where he will support marriage rights. According to his church's beliefs, this is to be understood – if not appreciated. He still believes it is destructive toward God's plan.

As do many of my United Methodist brethren.

I am dropping “cautiously” from my optimism about this Pope – but adding an asterisk. He is someone I can get behind – and be optimistic about – but you realize that you just aren't going to see eye-to-eye on certain things.

Besides, someone who has shown such humility so early, can't be all bad, right?

No-one could expect him to say sane things about gay people, or ordain women. The weight of tradition is too much. But when he says he wants a church for the poor, everyone knows that is at the centre of the Gospel. That is how he will be tested.
