General Conference 2012 – #GC2012 – Highlights from Twitter

For those of us who are United Methodists, it is of significant importance to note that our legislative body is meeting in Tampa, Florida this week.

For 40 years, the different issues surrounding the LBGTQI community will be under consideration–with differing and contentious results.  Also, a church restructuring plan is under consideration–endorsed by and fought of by Adam Hamilton–of which we are on to plan B.  Of considerable importance to churches and pastors alike, the guarantee of appointments is also on the table–it has already passed preliminary committee work.

I am in Forest, Indiana.  However, Twitter has provided–in my opinion–the best coverage of the events at General Conference.  You get a minute-by-minute account of the events from people actually sitting in the legislative groups and doing the work.  It has been amazing and captivating.

I wanted to share with you some of the Tweets that have most caught my attention.

There was also a lot of talk about the high cost of seminary and its graduates. I was disheartened at all the reports of people who thought seminarians were overpriced and of low quality. Obviously, the church has been infected with the same disease that critics of American universities have. Sad.

I thought this was a fabulous point. General Conference happens only once every 4 years. You should not be focused on reelection or disappointing one of the caucuses you belong to. Your annual conference elected you to vote on their behalf. Do it.

Another idea being discussed is a set-aside bishop for the denomination. I think it’s a good idea.

This was from this morning. Bishop Coyner–my bishop–makes a significant point, using his signature humor.

I totally agree with this.

Of all the important business being discussed, this issue will be the one that gets everyone’s attention. In fact, it is so big that celebrity blogger Perez Hilton wrote about it here.  This particular tweet is in reference to a subcommittee vote to strike language from the BOD that says that homosexuality is incompatible with Christian teaching.  The full committee vote happens today.

This new came through as I was waking up this morning. It appears that guaranteed appointments are going to be a thing of the past.

So, what do you think? Is General Conference going well? Poorly? Leave your comments below.

Look for more from me as General Conference continues.
